The Right Mental Attitude Requires No Willpower.

“Nothing can stop a man with the right mental attitude from achieving his goal; nothing on earth can help a man with the wrong mental attitude.”               Thomas Jefferson

This quote is so true in all aspects of life, even health & fitness. I was watching a show the other night called the “The men who made us fat”. This particular episode was on diet fads; The Dukan diet, The Atkin diet, Weight Watchers, Slim Fast and other meal replacement shakes. Interestingly most people who started any one of these diets failed. And in a study of Weight Watchers people only 16% had got to their goal weight and kept it off after 5 years. 20% of Slim Fast people had kept their weight off after 2 years.

I am sure most people reading this have at some point in their life tried some sort of diet, lost weight and put it back on.

So why is this so?

According to Daniel Abraham, founder of Slim Fast, it’s not the product or the diet that fails. He said “It’s up to you, not up to something else. You’re in charge of you.” And I tend to agree. You can’t expect to do a diet for a specified period of time, then go back to your old habits without putting weight back on. After all it’s the old habits that got you in the mess in the first place.

The definition of insanity; doing the same thing and expecting a different result.

Losing weight or getting fit is not just about the latest diet or fitness craze. It’s about a lifestyle. And if you entre into your next health kick summonsing up your willpower to get through …. so many weeks or months, then you are setting yourself up for failure. You will become a statistic, one that has lost weight and put it back on and blames the product.

It doesn’t matter what type of diet or fitness regime you embark on, if your mind is not ready you will be relying on willpower and willpower only lasts for so long. When we use willpower we feel deprived. If we want to succeed we mustn’t feel like we are being deprived.

If your weakness is cake or sugary food, you need to change what that food means to you. Instead of having to overcome a temptation, think of this food as poisonous and harmful to your body that will cause you to become fat, bloated, lethargic and sick. This type of attitude will allow you to make health and fitness changes that are lifestyle changes not just a fad.

If you have the right attitude and mindset, change becomes something you want to do, something that flows and feels right, not something that requires massive willpower and feelings of being deprived.
