We all know it’s important to set goals. So why do so many of us fail to set goals? Not only short term goals but big long term goals, 12 months or 5 year goals. Setting goals is a three step process; know what you want (in detail), align your energy (remove all negative thoughts with regard to what you want) and finally take inspired action (if required).

This blog will take a closer look at step 2 align your energy. It is all about changing your habitual thinking (negative thinking that is). Most individuals have been conditioned or programmed probably since childhood by well-meaning family members, friends and trustworthy media to think, or more accurately respond to a particular stimulus, in a certain way.

Changing that programmed “response” is not an easy thing to do. How do you know what has been programmed?

The key to breaking the chronic patterns of negative thinking is that you need to identify your negative thought patterns. Most people cannot identify their misalignment and are left wondering why things don’t work out or why they’re not getting what they have asked for. The good news is that there are a number of ways to identify the often “subconscious” misalignment. All thoughts are energy and all emotions are a feedback mechanism about what you’re thinking at any point in time.

Positive thoughts = positive emotions = alignment = what you want is on its way.

One way to identify if you are in alignment or not is to” Look around You!” Check out your current environment and circumstances.

If it’s all about energy and you mainly attract what you are feeling (which is a result of what you are thinking), then your current environment and the circumstances which you encounter will be a perfect reflection of what’s going on inside you. As stated by James Allen “circumstance does not make the man; it reveals him to himself” and “ Men do not attract that which they want, but that which they are”.

What is your environment like? What circumstances do you encounter on a regular basis? Is your environment filled with beauty, peace and caring people? Are your circumstances abundant, successful and harmonious? If so your thoughts and feelings will no doubt be filled with courage, generosity and love towards all.

So, perhaps your universe isn’t that perfect. Then look at things in your environment or your circumstances that aren’t ideal and ask yourself one question; what part of me is reflected in my environment or circumstances I encounter?

I admit it’s a tough question to answer and not everyone is ready for this information. It basically places responsibility squarely in your hands (it may not be your fault, but it is your responsibility to change, if change is required). Most people can’t honestly answer the question. If you are one of those people, then I suggest you find someone else to answer it for you. What do I mean? Take this for example; if your environment or circumstance is filled with people constantly criticising your work or ideas, ask someone close to you (your partner or close friend, someone you know will be honest with you) if you tend to criticise or easily dismiss people’s ideas? Do you constantly complain about people’s behaviour? Do you engage in the gossip about other people?

Most people who dare to ask will usually be surprised to hear that they have within them an element of the circumstances or environment that they are complaining about. In other words, if you’re receiving it, you are most likely “giving” it! A very important note here; when I use the term “giving” I also mean in terms of energy, in other words you may not be gossiping, complaining or criticising, but are you focused on the negative behaviour? Do you give the circumstances a lot of attention? Do you constantly talk about your negative experience? Have you joined a group to “fight” against it? Remember, enough emotional attention to the unwanted is enough to bring it.

Attention (positive or negative) = alignment

Change your attention, focus, thinking, response etc. and watch your life change.

Sooner or later (whether today or in 50 years) you will come to the realisation that, any time in your life, when your circumstances or environment change… it has been in exact ratio with your altered mental condition. If you’re really ready and serious about creating change in your life then you need to take responsibility for what you are putting out there, how you are behaving and what you are thinking or paying attention to.

There is no point in complaining about the effects of things when you’re harbouring their very cause in your heart.

When you understand that your circumstances or environment are a perfect reflection of what’s inside, then you’ll be in a better position to identify the unproductive thoughts and change them.
